The Coalition for Reproductive Choice formally came together in 1982 to oppose the “well-funded vocal minority which says a woman does not have the right to control her own reproduction or body.” The CFRC advocated for the repeal of Section 251 of the Criminal Code of Canada and the legalization of free-standing reproductive health clinics.
Over thirty organizations joined the Coalition for Reproductive Choice in its first year, including the New Democratic Party Status of Women Committee, Women’s Health Clinic, Manitoba Association of Women and the Law, Manitoba Action Committee on the Status of Women, Canadian Abortion Rights Action League, Congress of Canadian Women, Manitoba Federation of Labour Equal Rights and Opportunities Committee, HERizons, Communist Party of Manitoba, Winnipeg Women’s Cultural and Educational Centre, University of Winnipeg Women’s Centre, Womyn’s Centre at the University of Manitoba, National Council of Jewish Women, Women in Trades, Liberation Books, Voice of Women, Klinic, Nellie McClung Theatre, Business and Professionals in Support of Reproductive Choice, Wolseley NDP Constituency Assoc., Osborne NDP Constituency Assoc., Labour People for Choice, Winnipeg Y.W. C.A., Lawyers for Reproductive Choice, Nurses for Choice, Manitoba Physicians for Reproductive Choice, Nurse Practitioners of Manitoba, CUPE Local 2348 (Klinic), CUPE Local 2722 (Oxfam).
